cosmos book cover design
During the Image Making Module at N.I.D., we reimagined book covers, I drew inspiration from Carl Sagan's COSMOS.
about the book
Cosmos, a 1980 science book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Carl Sagan, consists of 13 illustrated chapters, mirroring the 13 episodes of the Cosmos TV series. This book aims to explore the intertwined progression of science and civilization.
Carl Sagan's primary goal with both the book and TV series was to simplify complex scientific concepts for a broad audience. Cosmos' success, fueled by the TV show's popularity, led to remarkable achievements. It spent 50 weeks on the Publishers Weekly best-sellers list and 70 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, making it the best-selling science book of its time. In 1981, it was honored with the Hugo Award for Best Non-Fiction Book.
considerations when designing the cover
book cover trends 2020
Books, repositories of valuable information and narratives, require effective marketing, just like any other product. This is where the significance of book cover design emerges.
A book's cover serves as a visual representation of its content and should leave a lasting impression. Staying current with design trends is imperative in this regard.
Compelling and purpose-driven book covers play a pivotal role in connecting stories with readers. The careful selection of concepts, colors, fonts, images, and other elements serves a specific purpose. Ultimately, the cover provides a tantalizing
glimpse into the narrative held within the pages.

process: understanding the requirements

process: inking the cosmos

Opting for outer space or the cosmos as the primary theme for the book cover,
I employed Camlin Photo Inks to craft the dynamic patterns of the universe.
Starting with watercolors in my initial attempts, I soon transitioned to inks for
their rich hues.
